Discourse

Create a structured online community for discussion, support, and shared knowledge.

What it helps with

Discourse is a mature community platform with topics, categories, trust levels, moderation, search, notifications, email interaction, and integrations. A product company, association, or education business can build a customer or member community that becomes searchable over time. The hosted service is the simplest route. Official self-hosting expects a dedicated 64-bit Linux server and Docker-based launcher plus mail, DNS, storage, backups, monitoring, moderation, and upgrades; it is not generic “Docker simple.”

Best fit

Best for sustained communities with moderators and content strategy; not for a small temporary group or a team without community ownership.

Setup reality

Ops-heavy; official supported self-hosting has specific server, mail, DNS, container, backup and upgrade expectations.

License context

Copyleft licenseBusiness use is allowed. Sharing duties depend on the specific license and how modified software is distributed or offered.

GPL-2.0-or-later; internal/hosted use is allowed; distributing modified GPL code requires source, while hosting alone is not the AGPL network trigger.
