OpenAI Codex

A coding assistant that works in your terminal and can inspect, change, and test your software.

What it helps with

An SMB with an internal developer, or an agency maintaining client software, can use Codex to understand an existing codebase, draft changes, run tests, and review work from a terminal or supported editor. It is not a replacement for a developer or for production approvals: the agent can execute commands and change files, so someone still needs to define scope, review diffs, protect secrets, and decide what gets deployed.

Best fit

Best for software teams already using OpenAI and Git; not a good fit for non-technical staff expecting a no-code business app.

Setup reality

One-click for the CLI/app package, but day-to-day use is some-technical because it works on source code and shell commands.

License context

Permissive licenseBusiness use and modification are generally allowed. Keep required notices and review trademarks, dependencies, and hosted-service terms.

Apache-2.0. Business use and modification are allowed, subject to retaining the license/notice and other Apache obligations.
