OpenSpec

A lightweight way to agree on requirements and tasks before asking an AI agent to change code.

What it helps with

OpenSpec keeps each proposed software change in plain Markdown: why it matters, requirements, design choices, and tasks. An SMB product team or agency can review those files with a client before an agent implements anything, reducing requirement drift across chat sessions. It supports many coding assistants and offers a lighter workflow than some specification systems. It still relies on a capable model and reviewer; a well-formatted specification can still contain bad assumptions.

Best fit

Best for feature work shared by product, client, and developer; not for tiny fixes or teams that will not maintain specs.

Setup reality

One-click npm package, followed by some-technical project initialization and agent selection; Node.js 20.19+ is required.

License context

Permissive licenseBusiness use and modification are generally allowed. Keep required notices and review trademarks, dependencies, and hosted-service terms.

MIT. Commercial use and modification are permitted with the notice retained.
