Serena

IDE-like code search and editing tools that help AI agents work safely across large projects.

What it helps with

Serena gives an MCP-compatible coding agent symbol-level search, references, editing, refactoring, and project memory, similar to capabilities in an IDE. An agency maintaining a large or unfamiliar codebase can use it to reduce fragile text searches and cross-file edits. It supports Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, and many IDE clients. It is a developer tool: language servers, MCP configuration, project activation, and tool permissions still need technical oversight.

Best fit

Best for developers working in medium or large repositories; not for non-code business workflows or very small projects.

Setup reality

Needs developer, not “docker-simple”: the normal path adds a local MCP server and language-server backend to the chosen client.

License context

Permissive licenseBusiness use and modification are generally allowed. Keep required notices and review trademarks, dependencies, and hosted-service terms.

MIT for the core. The optional JetBrains plugin is a separate paid product.
